Now that Microsoft has given more clarity to it's WPF plan and we are starting to see what one can accomplish with it, the main competition for Flash will come in a few years when WPF/E is released. The sample apps shown using WPF are doing a few things Flash can’t do yet, particularly the 3d stuff.
Adobe has enough time to deal with this upcoming threat to the dominance of Flash. So, what will they do?
-Will they make Flash 3D ready?
-Will they finally make Flash officially support the creation of desktop apps?
Will they make Flash 3D ready?
One idea is to dump Director and move those 3D features into Flash. There really is no use for Director anymore particularly with 3rd party Flash swf2exes that let you do more than anything Director can do( except 3D and a few other things ).
Will they finally make Flash officially support the creation of desktop apps?
Based on the silly Central experiment that should have never happened, it seems Adobe will never “get it” when it comes to desktop apps and Flash. While third party tools like zinc and mProjector are giving Flash developers ultimate power on the desktop side, Adobe is not even acknowledging this movement. However, with Apollo on its way, maybe they have addressed this.
If they don’t address these two issues, you might see Flash loose it's dominance soon, particularly if WPF/E can deliver as being stated. It will really be interesting to see how this plays out over the next 5 years.
